A cold front pushed through southeast Australia yesterday, bringing highland snow and winter like temperatures. It was a very cold morning on Thursday across most of Victoria and New South Wales in the aftermath of the front. Temperatures plummeted as much as 15 degrees below average in some districts. Castlemaine in the Victorian North Central district dipped to a nippy zero degrees, 13 below the average and coldest January morning in at least 45 years. Coldstream in Melbourne was true to its name, dropping to 5 degrees, which is 7 below average. Sub-zero temperatures were also experienced across the border in NSW. Oberon had a low of minus 1, the most frigid for the month in at least 47 years. The Sydney suburb of Horsley Park was down to 10 degrees, the coldest in at least 15 years for January. The chilling will be short-lived due to a high pressure system moving in from the west. This high will allow heat to rebuild under mostly sunny skies, with a return to mid-thirty-degree heat likely in Adelaide on Monday. Melbourne can expect heating into the low thirties early in the new week, along with a few very warm nights.
