Australia's fourth tropical cyclone of the season is likely to form off Western Australia's Kimberley coast today and may make landfall this weekend. A tropical low caused widespread rain and thunderstorms as it moved across the Kimberly over the last two days. During the 48 hours to 9am on Friday, Truscott received 222mm and 192mm was registered at Theda in the northern Kimberley district. The low is expected to move offshore near Broome later today, where it should strengthen and develop into a category one tropical cyclone. The system will be named Cyclone Kelvin and is expected to intensify further during the next 24 to 48 hours, before most likely turning towards the south during the weekend. This track would allow the system to approach the west Kimberley coast and it may make landfall as a category three severe tropical cyclone on Sunday. As of 10am local time, a cyclone watch was in place for coastal and inland areas between Cape Laveque and Pardoo Roadhouse, including Broome. A cyclone Watch extended from Pardoo Roadhouse to Whim Creek, including Port Hedland. If Cyclone Kelvin does continue to intensify before landfall, it may be capable of producing wind gusts in excess of 165km/h near its core and further heavy rainfall.
