Tropical Cyclone Hilda was named on Wednesday night whilst over the ocean near Broome before crossing the coast north of Bidyadanga on Thursday morning. Tropical Cyclone Hilda brought destructive winds and heavy rain to parts of the Kimberley coast. Cygnet Bay picked up a whopping 429mm of rain in two days which is their highest two day total in over 50 years. West Roebuck had their biggest one day rain total in 17 years with 196mm reaching the gauge and Derby's 179mm was their highest in 14 years. Elsewhere Broome recorded 90mm and Port Hedland 26mm. Hilda packed some destructive gusts of wind as well. Broome had a gust of 139km/h as the system gained strength offshore, this was the strongest wind gust in close to two years. West Roebuck recorded their highest gust of wind in six years with 96km/h. As Hilda moved over land the system weakened below cyclone intensity however severe weather continued over inland parts of Western Australia with heavy rain and damaging winds. As of Saturday morning winds had eased however a Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rain remained in place for southwest parts of the North Interior and northwest parts of the South Interior. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Hilda will continue to weaken as it moves further inland, allowing conditions to ease.
