Thunderstorms have rolled through Melbourne this morning bringing heavy rain, and are set to become more widespread this afternoon. A low pressure trough being fed by humid northerly winds is moving across Victoria today, triggering showers and thunderstorms across the Melbourne area. Thunderstorms moved into the metropolitan area around 7am-8am and have been becoming more frequent throughout the day as the trough edges closer. A strong band of thunderstorms hit western suburbs between 11am and midday, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning and bringing heavy rain. To midday, Avalon picked up 12mm including 3mm in 10 minutes, while Sheoks recorded 13mm. Thunderstorms will become more widespread across the metropolitan region this afternoon, bringing the risk of further severe thunderstorms. Any thunderstorms bring the risk of heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and large hail. Thankfully for commuters, thunderstorm activity should have generally cleared the region by 4pm-5pm, making the trip home a little bit easier. By the time the storms have cleared, many parts of the Melbourne area would have collected 10-20mm. Looking further ahead, thunderstorms are generally unlikely until at least late in the weekend as another troughs develops.
