Thunderstorms light up SA and VIC

Thunderstorms light up SA and VIC
A band of thunderstorms have swept across South Australia and Victoria on Sunday and into today, bringing thousands of lightning strikes, damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall. A broad low pressure trough has been bringing the thundery weather, causing thunderstorms to develop in SA on Sunday morning before spreading into VIC overnight and persisting into today. Across SA almost 80,000 lightning strikes have been recorded across the last 24 hours, while VIC has seen almost 40,000 cloud to ground strikes across the same period. From those ranging from Whyalla to Mansfield (including Adelaide and Melbourne), the bulk of the lightning occurred in the night hours, producing a spectacular lightning show. Thunderstorms were generally not damaging, although wind gusts reached 95km/h at Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta in SA's north. In Melbourne, thunderstorms produced the heaviest rain since September last year as 26mm fell in the 24 hours to 9am today. Rain was torrential at times, with 5mm falling in just 10 minutes around 8am today in the city and Scoresby. However, it was still the lightning strikes that caused the most disruptions, leaving thousands of people without power. With the trough now rapidly clearing the nation's southeast, only a few thunderstorms remain a risk in eastern and southeastern parts of VIC until late this afternoon, before clearing overnight.
