Thick fog shrouds Sydney and Canberra

Thick fog shrouds Sydney and Canberra
Both Sydney and Canberra have woken up to dense morning fog to kick off Mother's Day. The Sydney Basin saw its most widespread thick fog of the year, as light winds combined with high moisture levels. Sydney city had its visibility reduced down to 50 metres, while in some western suburbs it was even lower. In Sydney's north, it was a mix of smoke haze and fog due to back burning in the area over the last two days. Sydney's airport largely missed out, with light morning fog only causing minimal disruptions to flights. The fog also extended across much of the state's southern and central ranges as well as the ACT, with visibility reduced to less than 50 metres at Canberra. Fog should burn off by about 9am as the sun gains strength. Once the fog clears, Sydney can expect a stunning Mother's Day, with generally clear skies and a top of 23 degrees, three above average for May. Canberra will start off beautiful with mostly sunny skies, before cloud moves in from the afternoon. Despite the cloud, it should remain dry throughout the day with a top temperature of 22 degrees, six above average for this time of year. Foggy mornings may occur at Canberra early next week, however Sydney's next chance will not be until next weekend due to windier conditions throughout the week.
