Tasmania set for another freezing night

Tasmania set for another freezing night
The mercury is set to plummet tonight across parts of Tasmania, with some places possibly seeing their coldest night in around two years. It has been an unseasonably cold start to the month after a strong cold front swept through on the last day of autumn, leaving behind a cold pool of air in its wake. Minimum temperatures in Launceston have averaged a chilly -2.6 degrees across the last three nights, the coldest run for any time of year in more than a decade. However, some places could still yet see their coldest night in this spell (and possibly in around two years for some places) as a high pressure ridge brings an ideal combination of clear skies and light winds. Launceston is forecast to dip to minus three degrees, its coldest night since July 2013. This would also make it the fourth consecutive night of dipping below -2 degrees, a feat which has not occurred since August 1997. The state's capital is forecast to plummet to just one degree and Swansea minus one degree, the coldest night since September 2013. Parts of the Central Plateau including Cradle Valley and Liawenee should fall to around minus five degrees, with widespread frost expected across the region. After another cool day on Thursday, conditions should become progressively warmer (even unseasonably warm) ahead of a front, which will bring a burst of heavy rain and wind from Sunday.
