A deep low pressure system is heading towards Tasmania, bringing rain and strong winds. Rain will begin to become heavy as the low approaches during Sunday, with the western coasts and ranges likely to pick up the most of the rain, which could be as much as 40mm. Further east, falls will be much lighter, and only a few millimetres at best. The winds that will accompany this low pressure system also may bring gusts around 85km/h to 100km/h around the exposed coast and ranges both today and on Sunday. It may be windier in parts of Tasmania than around the Gulf of Carpentaria where a tropical cyclone is possible. Reprieve from the wind and rain will arrive on Monday and Tuesday as the low slips further away, but settled conditions won’t last very long. By Wednesday, a gusty cold front will see winds increase once again. Winds will be very strong in the west again. However, the often-sheltered eastern parts of the island, including Hobart, will experience these gusty conditions on Wednesday and parts of Thursday.
