Sydneysiders urged to avoid coastal waters this weekend

Sydneysiders urged to avoid coastal waters this weekend
Very powerful surf is currently battering the central and southern NSW coast. Despite the increasing sunshine and warmer temperatures after a gloomy and cold week, Sydneysiders have been urged by Surf Life Saving Australia and council lifeguards alike to stay clear of the coastal waters this weekend. Harbour and Bay beaches, as well as pools will be better options to seek respite from the warmer temperatures this weekend. Coogee Beach (on Sydney's eastern suburbs) was closed yesterday due to the powerful surf. Usually, this beach is protected from big swells by the Wedding Cake Island, making it one of the city's most family-friendly beaches in Sydney. A deepening low over the Tasman Sea, has been directing strong southerly winds along the eastern Victoria and New South Wales coasts over the past 48 hours, generating large and powerful waves. The iconic Ohana Surf Classic, a nipper carnival yearly held at Eloura Beach in the shire, was postponed today due to the large and dangerous surf. Over the past two days waves over eight metres in height have been recorded off Port Kembla and Eden, with the highest recorded overnight and early this morning. In Sydney, seas are likely to reach two metres before easing later today with a southerly swell of two to three metres. As the low moves away closer to New Zealand, seas will gradually ease with a southerly swell reaching about 2.5 metres tomorrow and and 1.5 metres on Monday. Surf conditions will finally return to normal by late Tuesday and Wednesday.
