Sydney sweats through spring

Tom Saunders
Sydney sizzled in another day of 30 degree temperatures on Thursday, continuing one of the hottest starts to spring on record. The city climbed to a high of 31 degrees, a full nine above the October average. It was even hotter in the west, reaching 34 at Penrith, their hottest day since January. The south coast of NSW also reached 34, as much as 13 above average. In western NSW Bourke and Wanaaring both reached a scorching 39. The trend will continue on Friday as a hot northwesterly airstream persists over the state. If Sydney reaches its forecast high of 35 degrees it will be the city's hottest day in 19 months. Sydney has now already sweated through four days over 30 so far this spring, two more than during the whole of last summer. Friday will make it five plus 30 days for only the second time this early in spring in 150 years of records.
