Sydney bathing in late season warmthBrett Dutschke, Sunday April 28, 2013 - 12:01 EST
It has been six years since Sydney has been as warm this late in autumn, bathing in 26 degree sunshine for the third day running.
You have to go back to May 2007 to find the last time the city has had three consecutive days this warm this late in the season. It is also only the eighth time in the last 150 years that it has been this warm this late.
A big plus for many people is that the current unseasonable, sunny warmth is falling on their long Anzac weekend. It is also the final weekend of the school holidays.
It is also not too bad for those who have had to put up with a standard two-day weekend. This is the warmest weekend this late in autumn in 23 years. For both Saturday and Sunday to reach at least 26 degrees has not occurred this late in autumn since 1990.
The warmer-than-normal air has been building over central Australia with help from a lengthy run of cloud-free skies and a lack of strong cold fronts. In the last few days this warm air had been drawn across the southeast of the country.
A cooler change is not too far away from Sydney, due to arrive on Monday afternoon.
The cooling is only likely to be gradual due to the front only being weak. The city should still reach the mid 20s each day until Wednesday. It won't be until later in the week before it cools to the low 20s with help from a stronger front which will bring showers.
On Sunday morning the first, weaker front had crossed Victoria and Tasmania after having moved through South Australia, bringing an end to unseasonable warmth. Saturday was the warmest day this late in autumn in eight years for parts of central and western Victoria and southeastern and western SA.
