Sweltering heat to end the decade
Josh Fisher

Heat has lashed the country's southeast for the last time in 2009. It was a scorcher for those who were celebrating the New Year outside today as temperatures rose to around 40 degrees.
Adelaide broke over 40 degrees early in the afternoon, reaching a top of 41. This made it their second warmest New Years Eve since records began 32 years ago, behind the 2007 NYE when temperatures reached 42 degrees.
Many areas across South Australia soared 10 to 15 degrees above average. Edithburg topped the rest, reaching 17 degrees above average to 41 degrees. But one of the hottest locations in the state was Roseworthy, reaching 43 degrees.
This heat came as hot northerly winds dug into the south, ahead of a trough and front that have been edging their way into the southeast from the west.
This heat even extended to give Victoria a hot end to the decade. Melbourne was able to climb to 35 degrees only making it their warmest New Years Eve in two years but it made for sweaty end.
The trough and front are edging their way into western VIC this afternoon and are threatening to disrupt the celebrations in Melbourne, with late storms expected. The good news is cooler temperatures for tomorrow.
