Swelter starts before Summer

Monday November 30, 2009 - 17:35 EDT

Queensland has experienced its warmest November since 2005.

The Weather Bureau's grid system shows the state's mean November temperature was 28.2 degrees celsius - more than one degree above average.

Climate Services Manager Jeff Sabburg says there were record highs in three places.

Gympie's temperature reached 40.5 on November 17.

Mitchell equalled a previous temperature recorded in 2006 and Applethorpe reached 34.2 - beating its previous record of 34.

Mount Isa recorded its lowest November day-time temperature at 19.2 degrees.

Generous rain fell across Queensland's tropics during November but it was a relatively dry month across the rest of the state.

Queensland's median rainfall was 28.4 millimetres - which ranks in the bottom third of the 110 years that records have been kept.

Mr Sabburg says the best falls were recorded around Cairns.

"Wettest overall in the state was Babinda and that had 517.7 millimetres," he said.

"Next in line was Mount Sophia with 487 millimetres followed by Nerada with 450 millimetres.

The driest place in the state was Coen Airport with just 0.2 millimetres.
