Sweaty day in SA, but relief is on the way

Adelaide just registered its first 36 degree day of the season as hot northerly winds fanned the state on Monday.

The mercury hit 36.0 degrees at Adelaide's Kent Town weather station shortly after 1pm on Monday, which is seven degrees above average for November and the city's warmest day since April.

The hot air is being directed towards Adelaide today by a broad fetch of northerly winds that stretch from northern WA, down across central Australia, to the nation's south coast.

This tongue of heat, combined with fresh to strong winds, is causing Severe to Extreme fire danger ratings in some parts of South Australia today.

A low pressure trough over the state's west has also produced severe thunderstorms today, with a wind gust of 115km/h clocked at Tarcoola at 2pm.

This trough will being a cooler southwesterly change to Adelaide late this afternoon or early evening, along with the chance of a late shower or storm in the city.

The mercury will only reach a below-average maximum of 20 degrees on Tuesday in the wake of this evening's change. Temperatures will dip even lower later in the week as an upper-level pool of cold air passed over southern Australia. Adelaide is only forecast to reach 18 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, which would be the city's coolest pair of November days in five years.
