Summer warmth and springtime snow
A strong cold front moving across the south of the nation today and tomorrow will bring a split of summer and winter conditions, although the wintry spell will only be brief.
Ahead of this front, hot air is being drawn down from the north and interior of the continent, bringing summer like and significantly above average temperatures to both Victoria and New South Wales. In Victoria, Melbourne and Bendigo will see just shy of 10 degrees above the average today with temperatures in the high 20's expected. Conditions will be gusty however, particularly along the coast as the front brings strong winds across the region.
The ACT is also expected to reach the high 20's today, around 8 degrees above average, whilst Sydney should break into the early 30's tomorrow, about 10 degrees above average. Further inland temperatures will climb high still, with Bourke a chance of peaking around 34 degrees.
These summer like conditions won't last for long however, as temperatures are expected to drop almost 10 degrees or more for some places in the wake of the front. Melbourne will drop to around 17 degrees and Bendigo around 18 degrees on Monday, whilst Sydney and Canberra will cool to around 20 by Tuesday.
In contrast to the blast of heat ahead of the front, a cold pool of air behind it, combined with rain and showers will lead to around 2-5cm of snow falling over the alps overnight Monday. This won't hang around however and is expected to melt during the following day.
So before the cooler temperatures return, grab the sunscreen, head outside and enjoy the sun!
