Storms bring hail to VIC and NSW

Rob Sharpe, Sunday November 18, 2012 - 15:41 EDT

Thunderstorms are striking southeastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria, bringing hail and the risk of damaging winds.

With many people focussing on the thunderstorms in northeastern NSW and southeastern QLD, the formation of these thunderstorms have gone under many people's radar.

Rain has been heavy at Gelantipy in East Gippsland with 6mm falling only 10 minutes at 2pm. Large hail has been reported in Bega and small hail at Merimbula on the NSW South Coast. Montague Island also experienced winds gusting to 89km/h.

These thunderstorms are due to a low pressure system off Australia's east coast which is delivering strong winds to the coast and providing instability for thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms are likely to come and go through the day, bringing the risk of further large hail, as well as the risk of damaging wind gusts.

The low is likely to move gradually move north while bringing a gusty southerly change with showers and storms.
