Storms heading to parts of drought declared Queensland

Storms heading to parts of drought declared Queensland
Much needed rain is on its way to farms in western and central Queensland with a moisture laden low pressure trough, but some will miss out. Large swathes of Queensland are in desperate need for rain and the best looking trough in months is about to cross the state. This trough has been picking up plenty of moisture in the east where it recently triggered severe thunderstorms in southeastern Queensland. A high pressure ridge is now strengthening along the coast, pushing the trough inland during this week. Today, storms are likely along the trough in fairly typical areas in eastern QLD, but tomorrow the driest areas will start to see good falls. The Maranoa and Warrego district is set to get some great falls, particularly in the west. Charleville is just one example of towns in the area with very little rainfall. It is coming off the back of its second driest year on record. This included only 41mm in the past six months, a period when they average just over 200mm. Charleville and nearby areas have the chance to see showers and storms amount to more than 50mm between Wednesday to Friday, however some parts may only get rain totals near 10mm. This trough brings the chance of storms even further west later in the week, whilst stretching north through all western and central districts. Approximately half of these areas will see falls above 10mm, whilst some areas could get too much rain in a short time, leading to flash flooding. The areas most likely to miss out from this are in the far west around Birdsville, however even they have the chance of seeing storms, most likely on Saturday before the trough moves west of Queensland next week when dry conditions will return.
