Steamy night across the south

Josh Fisher
After yesterday's extreme heat areas of the country's south got little relief overnight with record breaking minimum temperatures. Some areas only fell to around 30 degrees. With much of the south soaring into the forties on Wednesday, cloud then rolled in during the evening to trap that heat in overnight. The hot, fresh northwesterlies were also relentless, mixing the hot air through our atmosphere. In South Australia, Loxton remained 13 degrees above average at 25 degrees, making it their warmest December night in 25 years of records. Gluepot only fell to 26 degrees, making it their warmest December night in 10 years of records. For Victoria, the records were being raked in with areas remaining 15 to 20 degrees above average overnight. Records broken for December included: - Tatura at 27 degrees (44 years) - Kyabram at 27 degrees (42 years) - Strathbogie at 28 degrees (29 years) Echuca smashed their previous December record of 27.5 degrees, only falling to 29. This was their warmest December night in 127 years of records and their third warmest for any month. A trough swept through the south today, which will make for a much more comfortable night tonight.
