Southwestern Sydney smashed by storms

Southwestern Sydney smashed by storms
Wednesday evening saw a band of severe thunderstorms make their way across Sydney with the southwest copping the worst of it. The storms sparked up to the south of Sydney bringing quite the light show, with over 35,000 lightning strikes, as the band moved over head. Heavy rain struck the southwest at around 6:30pm on Wednesday evening. It passed through the southwest in under an hour but it brought over 30mm to Camden and 29mm to Badgerys creek. Rain became torrential at times with 16mm and 14mm falling in just 10 minutes at Camden and Badgerys Creek respectively. Damaging winds accompanied the heavy rain, pulling down trees and power lines and lifting the roof off a house. The southwest recorded the strongest wind gusts with Badgerys Creek gusting to 82km/h, Camden, 74km/h, and Bankstown, 76km/h. The reason for these storms was a broad region of instability associated with a low pressure trough moving across the state yesterday. Storms are a risk again for western parts of Sydney from this afternoon and into this evening as the low pressure trough lingers over the state. Storms that do spark up bring the risk of heavy rain and damaging wind gusts. Keep up to date with all weather warnings at http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp
