Southeast Shivers ahead of Trough

Paddy Aicken, Thursday December 4, 2008 - 20:01 EDT

Last night temperatures across Tasmania and the southeastern mainland were up to ten degrees below average.

A combination of factors led to last nights chilly conditions. The cool southerly change that swept across the southeast yesterday caused temperatures to plummet right up the east coast. In Sydney the change caused a ten degree temperature drop in just thirty minutes.

Dry stable air behind the cool change left skies almost cloud free across much of the eastern seaboard allowing temperatures to keep falling well into the early hours of the morning. In Launceston the temperature fell to just two degrees at five thirty this morning. This was eight degrees below average and their coldest December night in twelve years.

In Victoria, Portlands minimum temperature was a chilly four degrees, seven below average and their cold night in a month and a half.

A trough pushing in from the east has caused cloud to develop over much of the southeast today, which will lead to a warmer night tonight.
