Thunderstorms thrashed parts of southeast Queensland yesterday evening, courtesy of a low pressure trough. Over 4500 lightning strikes were recorded Saturday afternoon into the evening over the region, the majority of these between 15:00 and 19:00. One storm cell tracked northeastwards from Esk, over Caboolture, and brushed southern parts of the Sunshine Coast; this storm put on quite a show, producing over 150 ground strikes and over 2000 cloud strikes in under two hours. Beerburrum received a drenching, collecting 12mm in only ten minutes and in 23mm in total, while Brisbane Airport picked up 31mm in an hour during Saturday afternoon. More thundery outbreaks are likely in the coming week, as further low pressure troughs impact the region.
