Some suburbs picked up 5mm of rain before 9am, while rain gauges near Flemington Racecourse registered about 2-3mm. Fortunately for those attending the race, conditions will be drier in Melbourne this afternoon, although it's going to be noticeably cold. Fresh southerly winds are making it feel a few degrees colder than it actually is today. Temperatures of 13 to 14 degrees early this afternoon were feeling more like 11 to 12 degrees as southerly winds gusted to around 30km/h. Melbourne is forecast to reach a top of 16 degrees this afternoon, which would make this the coldest Melbourne cup day since 2006. However, wind chill will ensure that most of the afternoon feels a couple of degrees colder than this. If the temperature fails to reach 15 degrees this will be Melbourne's coldest Cup Day in 22 years.
