Snowy blast on the way

Josh Fisher, Friday July 30, 2010 - 17:25 EST

The resorts can expect a snowy week ahead, with blizzard conditions expected this weekend and as much as 50 to 100cm of snow in the next seven days.

A weak front will sweep across the southeast tonight, allowing colder winds to develop, with snow lowering on Saturday. These winds will continue to drive snow showers over the resorts through the day, with 10 to 20cm possible.

On Sunday, a stronger cold front will bring a burst of colder air with snowfalls dropping below 1000 metres. Strong to gale force winds will mix with the heavy snow to bring near blizzard conditions and as much as 20 to 40cm.

Monday through Thursday, pulses of cold air will sweep over the southeast, maintaining strong winds and snow showers. This should dump an extra 20 to 40cm on top of the weekend pile up.

The strong surges of cold air on Sunday and again on Wednesday are even likely to bring some snow to the higher ground of the Central Tablelands in New South Wales.

This wild winter weather will clear out by next weekend, bringing ideal conditions to hit the slopes as skies clear out and winds ease after the heavy snowfalls during the week.
