Snow business like visiting Kiwis

Brett Dutschke
The snow business in Australia is enjoying a rapid recovery and is even benefiting from visiting Kiwis in search of deep cover. Many New Zealanders have heard the news about the exceptional season in Australia and are making the trip to join in the fun. Historically, Australians keen on snow play often look overseas, including New Zealand but a month into the 2014 season the reverse is occurring. And there are good reasons why. Comparing snow depths at major resorts, Australia's are roughly double New Zealand's and later this week they could be triple. Snow is about 1.3 metres deep at Thredbo and Perisher and one metre at Falls Creek (depths more typical of late July or August) while only 60 and 40 centimetres deep respectively at New Zealand's The Remarkables and Mt Hutt. By next Saturday the depths should increase by 50-100cm at Australian resorts but only by 10cm across the ditch. This is a result of a strong cold front weakening as it crosses the Tasman Sea mid week, a typical occurrence so far this season. New Zealand should make a snowy comeback next Sunday and Monday when the polar jetstream aims and helps intensify another front on its approach to the country.
