Severe weather heading for WA

Severe weather heading for WA

After a dry and mostly sunny weekend in Perth, a burst of heavy rain and thunderstorms will affect the city from as early as Sunday night as a cold front sweeps over Western Australia.

The front is currently passing over the Indian Ocean and is on track to reach Australia's west coast late on Sunday.

This system will trigger a band of heavy rain and thunderstorms as it passes over the state's western and southern districts Sunday night and on Monday. Some of the thunderstorms that develop near this front may become severe, with damaging and even destructive winds possible, along with flash flooding.

A pool of cold and unstable air behind the initial front will continue to produce showers and thunderstorms across the South West Land Division on Monday. Another, weaker front will bring further showers over the state's lower west coast and southwest on Tuesday.

This pair of cold fronts is expected to produce 5-10mm of rain across inland areas of the South West Land Division, including the Wheat Belt, between Sunday night and Tuesday. Heavier falls are likely near the west and southwest coasts, where some areas could see 30-50mm.

Be sure to keep up to date with the latest severe weather warnings from Sunday into the start of next week.
