SE drought assessment 'a matter of timing'

Friday March 19, 2010 - 07:00 EDT

Monaro and High Country producers in the New South Wales South East are hopeful their drought status will improve next month.

In the latest assessment the region stayed in drought, but the Far South Coast moved to a marginal classification.

Monaro sheep farmer and Snowy River Shire Council Mayor, John Cahill, says it was a matter of timing.

Mr Cahill says the recent rain fell at the end of last month, after the drought assessment had been finalised.

He says the situation is looking positive.

"Well there is a fair amount of planting that has been undertaken," he said.

"It is indeed a pleasure to be in the paddock making hay right now.

"We got a very meagre spring but the situation has turned around dramatically, and anyone who has any quantity of lucerne has certainly been able to improve the condition of their stock."
