Scorching hot Perth day a cricket omen?

Scorching hot Perth day a cricket omen?

The Perth Scorchers take on the Brisbane Heat in the final of cricket's Big Bash League this Saturday evening Perth, and could you have two more aptly named teams?

The maximum temperature in Perth is tipped to reach 39°C this afternoon, which means it'll come perilously close – and may even exceed – Perth's hottest day of the 2022/23 summer to date. That was January 21, when the mercury peaked at 39.5°C.

Most Big Bash games are played in the evening under lights, so hot weather is not a major factor. But like most games in Perth, this year's final is a twilight fixture timed to cater for the eastern states TV audience. That means the first ball will be bowled at 4:30 pm local time.

That's pretty much the hottest part of the day at this time of year. For example on Friday, Perth's maximum temperature was 35.3°C with the peak occurring around 4:10 pm.

A typical T20 cricket innings lasts about 80 to 90 minutes, and at 5:50 pm on Friday, it was still 34.7°C. So the entire first innings of tonight's final will likely be played in scorching conditions.

Given that the home team is called the Perth Scorchers, you'd have to think that would favour the men in orange outfits. Then again, their opponents are the Brisbane Heat, who for the record, won their only BBL title in 2012/13, beating the Scorchers in Perth.

For those of you in Perth, max temps should drop into the mid-30s on Sunday, with a more comfortable run of maximums in the low-30s thereafter.
