Roll cloud over southern Queensland

Roll cloud over southern Queensland
A rare cloud formation was seen crossing southern Queensland on Monday morning. Sunrise over the Darling Downs yesterday revealed a thin line of cloud that could be seen stretching more than 100 kilometres into the distance. The formation, known as a roll cloud, developed as a westerly wind change passed through southern Queensland early on Monday. There were reports of up to three distinct roll clouds in the formation near Dalby, as people flocked to social media to share their photos. This phenomenon is similar to the famous morning glory cloud that can be witnessed around the Gulf of Carpentaria during the lead-up to northern Australia's wet season. While documenting these clouds is challenging due to their rarity, they were officially introduced into the International Cloud Atlas this year as a species called volutus.
