Revving up the sunshine for the Australian Grand Prix

Anthony Sharwood

The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne should be a dry-track affair, with the weather gods coming to the party for the first instalment of the race in three years, due to the Covid pandemic.

The Albert Park circuit has undergone significant changes since 2019, with a chicane removed, and the track upgraded to encourage more overtaking.

But one thing that shouldn't change – in a city famous for its fast-changing weather – is the sunshine and mild temperatures, which should persist right through the weekend till the chequered flag at around 5 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Melbourne has been dry since Tuesday, and has been spared the wet weather in NSW which spilled over to parts of northern Victoria on Friday.

That pattern is set to continue, with tops of around 26°C expected on both Saturday and Sunday under skies that will have a cloud here and there, but nothing that's likely to block out the sun for too long, or to bring rain.

Things change on Monday after a front whips across Bass Strait on Sunday night, with showers and a much cooler maximum of around 20°C on the cards.

But if this weekend's weather was an engine, it would be idling and making a beautiful purring noise. Enjoy it if you're lucky enough to be trackside!
