Record breaking March chill for Tasmania

Record breaking March chill for Tasmania
A vigorous cold front that blew through southeast Australia yesterday led to some of Tasmania's coldest March temperatures in more than 50 years. The cold front blasted the Apple Island with wind gusts as high as 146km/h at Hogan Island and 143km/h at Cape Grim. These southwest winds transported a very cold airmass from the Southern Ocean over the state, leading to an early Autumn chill. While Tasmania is no stranger to varying weather patterns, cold temperatures and strong winds, this front was a particularly strong one for this time of year. The daytime temperatures on Friday remained as much as 15 degrees below average in some areas, with snow falling to as low as 600 metres. Liawenee only climbed to two degrees on Friday, which was 14 degrees below their monthly average. This makes it their coldest March day in at least 12 years, which was accompanied by some light snow showers. Butlers Gorge was another location that beared frigid cold temperatures, only reaching two degrees on Friday. This was 15 degrees below its monthly average and was the coldest March day in 55 years of records. Even Hobart residents were forced to layer-up as the temperature struggled to reach the double digits. The maximum only briefly touched 12 degrees, which was the coldest March day since 1957. It wasn't just the cold temperatures, but also the winds which were blowing at around 50km/h through the city, making it feel even colder. For the remainder of the weekend, the wintry west to southwest winds will gradually ease, although temperatures will still remain well below normal. Hobart will only reach 16 degrees today, well below the monthly average of 20 degrees.
