Rare august rain soaks interior
Areas of rain and thunderstorms extending over central parts of the Northern Territory and central Queensland overnight, delivering some of the heaviest August rainfall since the early 90s. Thunderstorms over the Red Centre intensified into the evening while slowly extending their reach over inland parts of Queensland. It was around this time that Yuendumu collected the majority of the 10mm that fell to 9am today, the heaviest August rainfall since 1992. Arltunga managed to pick up 13mm, going down as the heaviest August total in six years. By the wee hours of this morning, rain and storms petered out over the NT, right around the time that things got interesting over QLD. Bedourie picked up their heaviest August rain since 2008 with 12mm collecting in the bucket, only usurped by Bollon which received 18mm, the best rain for this time of the year since 2007. The prospects for more rain over inland QLD look very good in the near future, with widespread falls of 25-50mm expected from the Northwest and Channel Country to the Darling Downs and Granite Belt along a trough on Tuesday. Isolated falls of 100mm are a chance, primarily over the Channel Country. Thick cloud may inhibit the development of thunderstorms along the main rainband, although storm potential is much greater along the leading edge (eastern flank) of the trough.
