Rain turned to snow showers over Canberra this morning.

While the snow melted as soon as it hit the ground, it provided a white spectacle not seen for some time in the capital region.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sean Carson says the snowline plummeted further than expected.

"There's a little bit of atmospheric physics going on at the moment," he said.

Mr Carson says there has been very little snow in Canberra over the past decade.

"Previous to the year 2000 we saw snow settling in Canberra on average once every three years," he said.

"But over the last decade we've had a lack of cold fronts making it this far north."

He expects the temperature will continue to drop as the day progresses with the chance of more snow flurries this afternoon.
