Rain, winds lash NSW

Friday July 30, 2010 - 22:34 EST

Heavy rains and strong winds are battering much of New South Wales tonight, with flood warnings issued for the Castlereagh River in the state's central west.

A low pressure trough is moving across New South Wales, bringing widespread rain, with up to 36 millimetres falling in the past 30 hours.

The rain has caused river level rises at Mendooran, where minor flooding is expected early tomorrow morning.

A short time ago the river was 2.16 metres and rising, with the weather bureau expecting it to top 2.4 metres sometime after 1:00am (AEST).

Elsewhere, a Flood Watch is current for the Peel, Namoi and Lower Gwydir Valleys.

A severe weather warning has also been issued for the north-west slopes and plains, including possible localised flooding, and a strong wind warning has been issued for coastal areas between Ulladulla and Point Danger.
