Rain to replace cold spell in parts of Queensland

Rain to replace cold spell in parts of Queensland
The run of cold mornings continued for parts of southern and eastern Qld on Wednesday, with some places recording their coldest August minimums in decades. A low due Friday will replace this cold with some healthy rainfall totals. Wednesday morning was particularly cold for many parts of Qld, most noticeably the southeast. A broad region of high pressure has kept the overnight conditions settled, with a southwest wind dragging a cold airmass up from the south. Coolangatta dipped to almost freezing on Wednesday morning, stopping at 0.5 degrees, the coldest August morning in around 30 years of records. Brisbane cooled to just above five degrees, the capital's coldest August morning in six years, whilst Tewantin residents had to think back over 20 years to a morning this cold, down to 4.6 degrees. The cold air made its way north as the night persisted, and Gladstone ended up recording its coldest August morning in a decade, dipping just under six degrees at the airport and eight degrees closer to town. Another chilly morning is likely for many places on Thursday, but an approaching low will bump up the minimums and bring some rain to the southeast. The heaviest rainfall totals will likely be in the far southeast corner of Qld, with some places possibly receiving over 40mm by the end of the coming weekend. Isolated thunderstorms are a high chance as the low crosses southern parts of the state, and with them is the best chance of higher rainfall totals.
