Rain stops Hinze Dam work

Charmaine Kane, Tuesday February 9, 2010 - 09:38 EDT

SEQ Water says wet weather has stopped work on part of the Hinze Dam in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The dam wall is being raised to nearly double its capacity to reduce the risk of flooding.

SEQ Water spokesman Mike Foster says near record falls on parts of the coast over the weekend have not delayed construction of the dam wall, but water is cascading over the spillway.

"We just have to sit back and wait to see how long it will take for water to stop actually flowing over it," he said.

"While we will continue to see slight inflows, we should start to see those levels overflowing the spillway start dropping off.

"It's about a metre, a metre-and-a-half at the moment. We should start to see that fall over the next day or two."
