Rain in western NSW finally benefiting Riverina

Widespread rain has been long-lasting enough across western New South Wales in the last few days to bring the highest falls in three-to-six months for many, and more than a year for some.

The Riverina, which has missed out on widespread good rain this year, is finally getting some handy falls. Griffith has had 32 millimetres worth in the last two days, including 25mm in one day, their highest rainfall in 18 months. This sort of rain has been missing at this time of year recently in Griffith. It's been 20 years since they've had this much in two days in June.

Other Riverina towns to benefit from two-days worth of steady rain are Yanco with 27mm, Coleambally and Narrandera with 24mm each and Hay with 22mm. This is the highest in 12 months for Yanco and six months for Narrandera and Hay. Coleambally has not this much rain in June in 14 years.

The main rain area is slowly edging south and east with the movement of a trough. Deniliquin, which has had less than 10mm so far from this event, may pick up another 10mm on Wednesday before clearing on Thursday. Drought-stricken Deniliquin is still more than 100mm short of their year-to-date average.

Further rain is likely on the weekend.
