Rain floods from Kimberley to Pilbara

Rain floods from Kimberley to Pilbara
Western Australia's Pilbara is on flood watch as heavy rain and storms move west from the sodden Kimberley. A well structured low pressure system delivered more than a month's worth of rain to parts of the Kimberley during the past week. Broome Airport recorded 65mm during the 24 hours to 9am today, their heaviest February rain in three years. The month to date has now seen 161mm, ninety percent of the long term average for February. Further east, Kununurra Airport has registered almost half a metre of rain so far during February, more than double the montly average of 210mm. This includes 293mm in just two days, both of which set new records for the wettest February day. Other locations that have exceeded their monthly average just 10 days into the month include Wyndham (340mm), Halls Creek (227mm) and Warmun (213mm). As heavy rain pushes west with the low today, concerns of flooding move with it. A flood watch is current for the De Grey River and upper areas of the Fortescue River, where 100-200mm will fall over the next 24 hours. Significant river rises leading to flooding are expected during Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday the low will have moved into the state's south, allowing swollen rivers to drain out in the north. Lingering instability is likely to cause further showers and storms over the Kimberley during coming days. Thankfully, these will not be as heavy and are unlikely to cause significant flooding.
