Rain and storms surge up QLD coast

Martin Palmer
Heavy rain and severe storms, waved goodbye to the Gold Coast last night and thundered their way towards the Sunshine Coast and beyond. Over the weekend, huge storms and rainfall battered the Gold Coast and inland, with the largest totals in years: - Coolangatta (Sunday) hit 123mm their best in February in 9 years. - Mt Tamborine (Sunday) took a huge 372mm, their heaviest in 10 years. - Miami (Monday) recorded 202mm, their best in 6 years. During Sunday though, the menacing trough was given a shove by a huge high pressure system, centered over New Zealand. The trough, succumbed to the bullying and moved north, pulling the wet weather with it. During Sunday parts of the Sunshine Coast felt its wrath, with 24 hour rainfall totals in the order of 50 to 140mm: - Ewen Maddock was swamped with 138mm. - Cooran amassed 139mm. - Inland, Maleny took 104mm. That's 313mm this month already, their monthly mean. Northern parts of the Sunshine Coast missed the heaviest stuff as severe storms fired inland and further south. The trough continues to weaken and head north. Next up is the Central Coast where 24 hour totals from 40 to 70mm are possible during Monday and Tuesday.
