Rain and storms soak eastern NSW and VIC
Rain and storms have swept through southeast Australia bringing the heaviest January rainfall in at least 15 years to some places. On Friday and into early Saturday morning a trough swept through New South Wales and Victoria bringing widespread rain and storms, especially in the east of the states. Thredbo had their highest rainfall total since February with 75mm reaching the gauge. Khancoban in the Southwest Slopes recorded 48mm which was their highest January fall in at least 15 years. The heavy falls weren't just confined to the south of the state. In the Northern Rivers, Murwillumbah had 44mm and Cape Byron 22mm. At times the rain was torrential with Lake Macquarie collecting 14mm and Nowra 15mm in just 10 minutes. Sydney missed the heaviest falls with just 2mm. Those in the southwest of the city had a bit more including 12mm at Camden. In eastern Victoria there were widespread falls of over 20mm including Orbost with 43mm and Wangaratta with 32mm who had their wettest days since June and September respectively. The highest total for the state was at Basin Creek in East Gippsland where 50mm fell. The heaviest rain has now cleared from Victoria and much of New South Wales with just a few isolated showers lingering until the afternoon.
