A slow-moving low pressure system and trough have caused a prolonged spell of heavy rain and storms over Queensland during the past week. Widespread rainfall totals of 100-300mm have been recorded across central and northern Queensland in the past seven days, with some areas receiving more than 400mm. Some of these areas typically see 50mm during all of March. Winton has received more rain in the last three days than the past year. The airport's weather station registered 228mm during the 72 hours to 9am on Tuesday and had only collected 120mm during the 12 month period ending in February this year. Richmond, in the state's Northern Goldfields, has already tripled its March monthly average, picking up 191mm within the last five days. Rain, storms and flooding will continue to affect parts of central and western Queensland on Wednesday, while also spreading into the Northern Territory as the low and trough move west.
