Queenslanders are in for a wild afternoon and night with severe thunderstorms sweeping across the state. A deep low pressure trough is moving east across Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, already producing severe thunderstorms. The most powerful storms are currently located near the QLD/NSW border in the Darling Downs & Granite Belt and the North West Slopes & Plains. As the afternoon progresses this huge band of storms will continue to plough its way east, reaching the coast in NSW from the mid-afternoon. Coastal areas are likely to see thunderstorms today between Port Macquarie and Bundaberg, with the risk stretching even further north overnight. Brisbane is at risk of severe thunderstorms from the late afternoon, probably not arriving before Stumps at the Gabba. The most likely severe feature from thunderstorms is damaging winds, but later today the risk of large hail should increase. Not all locations in this region will see severe thunderstorms, but it is important for everyone in the region to understand the risks that these severe thunderstorms pose.
