Potentially heavy falls for the Interior

Alex Krisman, Tuesday December 2, 2008 - 16:21 EDT

November was a record breaking month for rainfall in the Interior, and December shows promise of continuing this trend with heavy falls expected for central parts of the country this week.

Monthly totals for the interior depict abnormally wet conditions. Alice springs received 160mm, compared to the average of 27mm. This represents at least a 66 year record for November rain. Further south Kulgera collected 130mm for the month, compared to the 22mm average, at least a 36 year record. Furthermore, Kulgera received a record twenty four hour total of 32mm.

Looking into the first week of November, a broad band of tropical moisture being drawn south by the jet stream is expected to traverse the country. Although the exact location of rainfall is uncertain, it is quite likely that some regions will receive in excess of 50mm by next Monday, with even high totals possible for select locations. This rainfall is likely to be concentrated about northern SA and the southern NT.
