Port Macquarie leads the way for a wet weekend

Martin Palmer
Heavy rain has continued to fall right along the New South Wales coast, with more to arrive during the weekend. Port Macquarie airport took another 90mm to 9am today, that's 185mm in just 48 hours, the monthly average is 108mm. June's total of 249mm has contributed to a mammoth 1,706mm for the year so far. That is nearly 200mm greater than the average of 1,531mm and we still have half the year to go. Currently, the rain is affecting much of the Mid-North Coast and Northern Rivers as fresh easterly winds feed into an offshore trough. Taree recorded 85mm and Kempsey took 67mm, their heaviest rain since the severe flooding in February. The outlook for the weekend is more of the same with showers continuing along the NSW coast. They will be heavy again on Saturday over northern coasts, with falls topping 30 or 40mm, with something similar for Sunday. By Monday winds will have shifted more northeasterly, sucking warmer, moister air south. This will lead to some potentially heavier falls and although many should remain offshore, some could make landfall around exposed coastal locations.
