The State Emergency Service (SES) is gathering resources from around Victoria to prepare for moderate to major flooding in the state's north-east.

The weather bureau is predicting more than 100 millimetres could fall about the ranges and up to 70 millimetres of rain is expected in other parts of the north-east.

SES duty officer Keith O'Brien says they are bringing in emergency services personnel from around the state to staff an incident control centre this morning.

He says they are preparing for a major flood event which could isolate communities and cause flooding over roads.

"Our volunteers are standing up to be ready, we're also bringing in extra resources or having them made available for the north-east," he said.

"[This includes] air wing support and the potential for rescue if people are unfortunate enough to be caught in swift-flowing floodwaters."
