Needed rain, bad timing

Josh Fisher
Many drought stricken regions of the country are seeing their heaviest rain in years but as the rain pushes east some will see a drenching Christmas day. With the moisture being squeezed from the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Laurence the country's interior is seeing areas of heavy rain. The rain is stretching into the south as the moisture is fed into a trough. For all of the last minute travellers and shoppers this is making for hazardous travel and a grey lead up to the holiday. The rain battered Giles in Western Australia picked up their heaviest falls in a years with 42mm to 9am. Further south, Eucla picked up 35mm and their heaviest rain in three and a half years. As the trough and low slowly edge east it brought a cooler change and well needed rain to the sweltering South Australia. In the last 24 hours Ernabella picked up their heaviest rain in six years with 76mm. In the Northern Territory, Kulgera who has only seen around 2mm of rain since September, received 36mm to make it their heaviest rain in two and a half years. This rain will push into the east and meet up with moist northeasterly winds to bring heavy rain and a Christmas washout to parts of QLD and NSW.
