Snowfall over the past weekend is likely going to be topped up over the next few days as a weak cold front crosses the southeast. It could be estimated that snowfall over the past few days has added about 10-20cm of fresh powder to the ground. As another weak front is forecast to cross the southeast early on in the week, it is possible that another 10cm of snow could be deposited by the middle of the week. By Thursday 23rd, the snow depth at Spencer’s Creek (which is generally viewed as the official measurement for the season) could be passing 220cm. While an estimate, such a depth would be nearing last season’s high of 240.9cm. Unfortunately, high pressure building over the snowfields from the middle of the week looks prevent this peak from being passed in the immediate future. Although the high is likely to eventually give way to yet more cold fronts, it will linger long enough to result in some snowmelt. Given the relatively clear skies and a snow depth past 2m, this would likely be one of the most picturesque opportunities to go skiing any time soon. Closer to the end of the month, more falls are expected which have the potential to pass last year’s peak. This would make it the greatest snow depth since 2000, which peaked at 262cm. As the amount of snow coming down towards the end of the month is still uncertain, there is the potential to pass this peak too, likely resulting in the highest snow depth in a quarter of a century.
