More heavy rain and storms for QLD

Strong and moist southeasterly winds, an upper level trough and weak surface troughs have combined forces to bring another wet 24 hours to the QLD coast and tropics.

Northern parts of the Southeast Coast, the Central Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Highlands and Gulf Country received the heaviest falls in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday. There were scattered daily totals in excess of 50mm in these districts and as much as 112mm at Gregory Downs in the Gulf Country, due to heavy storms.

In Brisbane, Redcliffe gained the most with 26mm. This lifts the monthly total to just above half the February average. Proserpine on the Central Coast gained 87mm to 9am, the highest since March last year.

Brisbane should see showers increase on Friday with the development of a trough along the coast, which will be fed moisture by onshore winds. The models are suggesting some very heavy falls on Saturday, with the potential for 100mm or more, particularly about northern and eastern suburbs.

There is a severe weather warning current as of Friday morning for heavy rain in the Southeast Coast and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. There is likley to be 24 hour totals of 100 to 150mm about the coast and ranges with the potential for in excess of 200mm in parts. The heaviest falls are likley to develop late Friday and continue through to Saturday morning.

The heaviest falls should contract north along the coast on Sunday as a high pressure ridge strengthens in the east.
