Monster swell hits WA

Monster swell hits WA
A big 'purple blob' has moved across the Indian Ocean and unloaded on WA as big wave surfers flock to the wild west. A 'purple blob' is what surfers and forecasters use to describe a large swell, as forecasting models depict the largest swells and longest period in a purple colour. This swell in WA is definitely one of those, as the period peaked at 24 seconds period and 5.5 metre swell has moved across WA's South West. Large and thick waves in the 12-15ft range were ridden at North Point while offshore waves such as Cow Bombie would have seen even larger waves. Today the swell should be similar in size lingering around the 5 metre mark offering up an inconsistent 12-15ft, larger at offshore bombies. Further north, waves in Perth will peak at around 3-4ft while the northwest will see waves in the 10-12ft range. Winds were from the southeast on Friday creating just a bit of bump on the waves. Today, winds will be light and from the east, directly offshore, creating more groomed conditions. The large swell will hang around until Sunday morning before a gradual easing trend sets in with smaller conditions expected by Wednesday. A strong low pressure system formed 2000km southwest of WA over the last week creating this significant swell for WA. A broad high pressure system over the nation has brought light offshore winds grooming the large swell on offer in the west. This is an extremely large and powerful swell so care should be taken when near the coast. For those thinking of heading out into the ocean, make sure you go with a friend, stay within your own limits and if in doubt don't go out.
