Melbourne's coldest nights of the year still to come

Melbourne's coldest nights of the year still to come
Melbourne just experienced its second coldest night of the year, and the next two nights are likely to be the coldest so far this year. The mercury dipped to a chilly 4.9 degrees around 6am this morning, making it tough for some residents to get out of their warm beds to begin the working week. The only other time it has been colder this year was in early May, when it fell to 4.3 degrees. The next two nights are going to be even colder, as a slow-moving high pressure system brings a combination of clear skies and light winds. The city will chill to around four degrees early on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, the coldest since last winter. It will be even colder in northern suburbs where frost will be a commonplace, dipping to just two degrees at Tullamarine and one degree at Sunbury. Melburnians have had it relatively easy this year with night time temperatures, which are running more than two degrees above the long term average since May. Typically, Melbourne would have already experienced two or three nights below four degrees. Looking further ahead, night time temperatures will trend closer to average from about Thursday as a weak low pressure system brings cloudier skies and some rain.
