Making up for a weak winter

A cold blast is set to lick the southeast from Tuesday to Thursday, bringing low snowfalls to Victoria, Tasmania and even New South Wales, and a cold streak not seen since mid-July.
The cold air is currently crossing Tasmania, causing snow in southern and central areas to lower to between 500 and 600 metres tonight. Bushwalkers should take extreme care.
During early Tuesday morning the icy burst will move northward over Victoria, reaching NSW by evening, with the snow level lowering to just 1000 metres above sea level.
Southern resorts of Victoria are likely to pick up at least ten centimetres of snow, with spatterings of snow showers along the rest of the Victorian ranges, but just a whisker too late for the snow season.
The snow could even reach up into the NSW Central Tablelands, bringing a dusting of white to Mt Boyce and other nearby locales.
Temperatures in the capitals over the next few days look frosty. Melbourne is set to stay on or below 15 degrees until Friday. Hobart is set to reach just 10 degrees on Tuesday, the coldest since August. Canberra will only get to 11 on Wednesday, potentially the coldest October day in 10 years.
